Apple could update third-gen iPad next month

Since 2010, Apple has released a new version of their iPad in March, making release dates for future models rather easy to predict. However, the third-generation iPad may break suit next month, when it is said to receive and update.

According to a report by DisplaySearch, this newer iPad will arrive alongside the iPad mini, which is also said to be unveiled in October.

New features in the model come in the form of better efficiency Sharp IGZO panels, and a smaller, 9-pin dock connector.

The new iPad leads the tablet PC market with its high resolution (9.7” QXGA with 200+ ppi) and high color saturation. However, Apple is working with the LCD supply chain to refresh the display, including revising the LED backlight design for cost reduction, refining the thermal solution, reducing the weight by replacing some components, and fine tuning the panel transmittance for lower power consumption.

The big feature to come in this iPad would be the Sharp IGZO display, which is much more efficient than the current display powering the iPad. With this new display, Apple could either leave the current battery in the iPad, for extra battery life, or reduce the size of the battery, and make the iPad more affordable.

If this rumor does have basis to it, then it is likely that we’d see this iPad unveiled alongside the iPad mini at an October event.

Whether this means the end for March iPad events is not known, but if you are holding off on an iPad, waiting a month or so could save you a couple hundred dollars.
